The Skiff Bed

As the name of my blog suggests, I am a fisherman's wife and if you have been a reader for a while, you know that fishing, boats and the water are a big part of our life along with updating our home.  To take it a step further with our DIY lifestyle, my husband and I have built several boats together over the years.  (I am still trying to get him to guest blog about the boat build)

Many of you have seen our dock pictures with the boat on the lift.  That is our second boat to build together and is our personal boat.

My husband has many friends in the fly fishing and skiff community and one of them built a skiff bed for his son.  Blittle said he wanted to do the same thing but on an even smaller scale for Jaxson.  I told him that a skiff bed for the dog might be a little extreme.  And more importantly, where are we going to put it and will it go with our decor?

After some discussion he talked me into it and we got to work.  I figured a mini skiff would be easy compared to an entire boat.  :)

Blittle did most of the wood work and building of the bed.  I used high density foam as the mattress and sewed a custom sheet to fit the mattress as well as pillow cover (yes he uses a pillow). We chose colors that would really be found on a boat but also match our living room. It really turned out cute and Jaxson loves it. I will never get over how smart dogs can be.  Jason knew it was his before we were finished and had no problem doing a few test runs for us.

A good skiff has to have a great poling platform.  Blittle constructed it out of large dowel rods, puddy and a piece of wood with the edges cut into curves.

We built this over 2 years ago.  That was pre paint booth days back then and I just sprayed in the yard.  Things have come a long way.  :)

The bed is now in our living room, next to a window with a view of the water and definitely has some hours on it.  We are thinking about doing some maintenance work on it this summer to fix some wear and tear issues that have happened.

Jaxson loves his bed but Sabine likes it too and will occasionally be caught laying in it.  She like to lay there after she drinks water to lick her feet and she likes to get in it if there is no couch space available.

Sabine Lake in the bed.

Jaxson likes to stretch out and use all the space he can.

How can you not be in love with that face?  So cute.

I am still working on the living room layout which is why there is no tour of it yet but the boat bed will definitely be a part of it.  There is no way I can take it from him and it is a great conversation piece for new visitors to our home.

Another dog project:

Read about the Dog Food and Storage Armoire that I made for them!  Its a great DIY project for any pet owner.
